What to Wear: Family Portraits

Do you feel like your kids are growing up way too fast and you don't have the time to figure out what to do with digital photos?

I have a big family, so I get it! One of the toughest things about having family photos taken is deciding what everyone should wear.
Finding the right thing for each member is important because each of you are important! When you feel good in your clothing, it radiates outward and you look good in your photos.
Once you’ve booked your Family Portrait Session with me, I can personally help you with this decision if you need it.

To make the most of your photo investment, I recommend the following things for timeless and beautiful photos.

1. What colors go with your home decor?

This may sound like a strange place to start but this is important when you hang your beautiful family portraits. Some colors look great together and some do not. So, I like to start by thinking about where you plan to display your portraits.

Once you have made this decision, it is time to think about what color scheme (2-3 colors) to choose for your outfits, and then finally, you can begin choosing what to wear.

If the area where you plan to hang your family portrait is brightly colored, you may want to avoid brightly colored outfits so your colors don’t compete. Instead, you could opt for soft neutrals and muted tones. If your walls are neutral, outfits with pops of color would look great in your home! If you choose a bright pop of color, remember to use it sparingly - only a quarter of the outfits/ accents should contain it.

The location you choose will also impact the colors you choose to dress your family in. Think about the overall colors of your location. You’ll want to make sure your outfits don’t blend into the surrounding foliage.

2. Ladies First, Flatter Your Features

Yay - You're going to be in the photographs, instead of taking them! It's time for you to go shopping and pick your outfit first. Choosing flattering silhouettes and colors that complement your natural features is the best way to ensure you’ll love the way you look in your photos.

Note: Plan on a summer photo session? Remember to make sure your outfit choice covers those tan lines.

3. For the Men, Mix It Up

Many guys love to mix a suit coat, blazer, or sports coat with a different pant color. It adds some extra visual interest and helps to break up the color tones.

I can help you celebrate your family and hang some joy on your walls.

4. The Kiddos

For the girls, dresses and accessories are perfect. Maybe add a fun flower crown, bow, or headband for an extra pop of beautiful.

For the boys, layers are adorable. And possibly some cute details like suspenders or a fun bowtie. Whatever fits their personality!

5. Layers and Accessories Please!

Time to pull it all together. Layers create visual interest and if needed they will keep you warm and cozy during a fall shoot in the leaves. Think vests, statement necklaces, tights, cardigans, blazers, hats, and scarves.

If you’ve booked your session with me already - not to worry - I can help you with coordinating your outfits. Be sure to follow me on Pinterest for some family photo outfit inspiration. Good luck, and remember to have fun with the styling.
